There Is Ghana Be A Slight Delay...

 Hello family & friends, 

 

This is Jordan Biver writing our very last Ghana blog post. If you haven’t heard already, we stayed in Ghana for an extra day! Thank you, KLM and our broken plane, for a 27-hour flight delay. 



With our surprise extra day, we read by the pool and saw the movie Wonka at the mall! Officer Reginald and Evans met up with us in the evening to eat dinner with us and send us off to the airport (for round 2!)



All travel issues aside, I am sitting in the Amsterdam airport writing this and reflecting on our full trip. It has truly been a once in a lifetime learning experience. We have all grown tremendously as individuals and as a collective group throughout these past three weeks. I am so thankful for this experience and the family we have gained along the way. 


As we return to the cold of Minnesota, I encourage everyone, students and loved ones, to stay curious and never stop asking questions.

Day 1: Greetings from Ghana

  Greetings Family, Friends, and Loved Ones!   We are full of excitement to have finally landed in Accra, Ghana safe and sound! After a full day of travel, we were greeted by Officer Reginald, our energetic guide, and other SIT staff at the airport to take us to our hotels. Pictured below is our bus which stores our luggage above and provides us with scenic views and air-conditioning below.     The gentlemen are staying at the Lowell Hotel and the ladies are at the Great Ebenezer Hotel. Both are modest venues, but they will soon be full of learning, laughter, and rest as we grow to call them home for the next few weeks. We spent our travel day catching up on reading, watching movies, and sleeping: some of whom were more successful than others!   The airline food was sometimes tasty and often unknown, which is a foreshadow of our dining to come. Day 3: Twi-refic Rainy Day!

  We have had an absolutely wonderful start to our first few days in Accra!   After breakfast, we were treated to a guest lecture regarding the basics of Twi and cultural etiquette in Ghana. While English is the official language here, it is home to more than 80 languages, with Twi being the most prevelant.     Once we learned some new vocabulary and cultural nuances, we set off to immerse ourselves in an urban drop-off activity. We were tasked with meeting Ghanaians and asking them questions spanning from Ghanaian culture and values to perceptions of America.     As we debriefed our experiences, what impressed me most was the warmth and openness of the Ghanaian people we met. Their eagerness to share their perspectives on Ghanaian culture and their curiosity about our experiences as Americans fostered many meaningful exchanges of ideas. This activity not only broadened my understanding of Ghana but also revealed the diversity of experiences within this vibrant communit

An eager start!

   Our first full day in Ghana was full of adventure and by the end of the day we were all exhausted. The day was even longer for me, as a *slight* mix up with time zones and setting my phone’s clock meant I was awake, showered, dressed, and ready to go before anyone else had even snoozed their first alarm! This extra time was put to good use-- coming up with the perfect title for this blog post. Once the rest of the crew caught up, Evans gave us a tour of the SIT building and Haatso, Accra, the neighborhood surrounding where we are staying. We found ourselves intrigued with the four-story department store, Melcom, that sold everything from vegetables to exercise equipment.   After exploring Haatso, we enjoyed chicken and jollof rice before heading out to explore three memorial sites of Accra.
