Day 1: Greetings from Ghana

Greetings Family, Friends, and Loved Ones!

We are full of excitement to have finally landed in Accra, Ghana safe and sound! After a full day of travel, we were greeted by Officer Reginald, our energetic guide, and other SIT staff at the airport to take us to our hotels. Pictured below is our bus which stores our luggage above and provides us with scenic views and air-conditioning below.

The gentlemen are staying at the Lowell Hotel and the ladies are at the Great Ebenezer Hotel. Both are modest venues, but they will soon be full of learning, laughter, and rest as we grow to call them home for the next few weeks.

We spent our travel day catching up on reading, watching movies, and sleeping: some of whom were more successful than others!

The airline food was sometimes tasty and often unknown, which is a foreshadow of our dining to come. Last night, we were eased into Ghanaian cuisine with stir fry and mango.

Our ride from the airport into the city provided us our first glimpse of Accra. The differences between Ghana and the States are already evident, and we are excited to explore these avenues further throughout our stay.

Reflecting on our goals for this trip, I am left with one resounding objective: that each of us maintain curious minds and open hearts as we explore this country. We always have something to learn from each other, regardless of if the individual is a guest speaker, a member of our staff, a shop owner at the market, or even a fellow traveler. We can learn to appreciate this shared human dignity with each of our encounters here.

This morning, I give thanks for this incredible opportunity, and I pray for the continued safety and health of our group. Today we are excited for orientation and a tour of Accra! Stay tuned for many more memories and photos to come!

Best,

Alec
