An eager start!

Our first full day in Ghana was full of adventure and by the end of the day we were all exhausted. The day was even longer for me, as a *slight* mix up with time zones and setting my phone’s clock meant I was awake, showered, dressed, and ready to go before anyone else had even snoozed their first alarm! This extra time was put to good use--coming up with the perfect title for this blog post. Once the rest of the crew caught up, Evans gave us a tour of the SIT building and Haatso, Accra, the neighborhood surrounding where we are staying. We found ourselves intrigued with the four-story department store, Melcom, that sold everything from vegetables to exercise equipment.

After exploring Haatso, we enjoyed chicken and jollof rice before heading out to explore three memorial sites of Accra. Starting at the Kwame Nkumah Memorial, we learned about his efforts to gain Ghana’s independence and Kwame's tenure as the first president of the country.

After the Kwame Nkumah Memorial, we visited Independence Arch and Black Star Square, two symbols of Ghana's freedom and how this country's independence has affected other countries in Africa.

Our final memorial of the day was the W.E.B. DuBois Center. The center is located at his home in Accra. Along with housing the memorial, the center also hosts a free public library containing more than 3,500 of DuBois' personal books.

After a long day of exploring our temporary home, we were eager for dinner at African Regent Hotel. We arrived early and were able to dip our toes in the pool and play games until it was time for our reservation.

Dinner was a buffet with food ranging from goat soup to strawberry cake. We made good use of the unlimited buffet, having the opportunity to try many new authentic Ghanaian dishes.

Our final activity of the day was salsa dancing at the nearby Afri KikoHowever, to our delight, as soon as we showed up the DJ shifted to line dance songs and our crew boogied down to Cupid shuffle. As noted above, we were all exhausted by the time we returned home!
